ROCKWALL – Robert E. Lee’s Kelsey Spaude finished in third place in the girls 100-yard butterfly Saturday at the Class 6A Region III Swimming and Diving Championships at Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center.

Spaude’s time in the 100 fly was 58.92 seconds, with event winner Natalie Whalen of Southlake Carroll, who finishing in a time of 55.72. Anna Ittiruck of SLC was second in the event in a time of 57.46. The top finisher in each event qualified for state, along with the next eight best times from all the regions. It remains to be seen whether Spaude’s time will get her to state.

Spaude also reached the finals of the girls 200 individual medley, finishing sixth overall in a time of 2:13.39. Sofie Underhahl of Allen won the event in a time of 2:04.21.

Spaude’s efforts helped the REL girls team garner 126 total points for a seventh-place finish at regionals. Southlake Carroll was the girls champion with 463 points with Allen (277) in second and fellow District 11-6A foe Rockwall (275) third.

“Our goal with Spaude was breaking our school school of 58.4 and she got close to that,” Lee coach Jason Petty said. “She came into the season not ever breaking a minute, so we were happy with her performance.

“I thought the girls did really well, particularly the relays, gettting in the finals in two and winning the consolation final in the 500 freestyle relay.”

On the boys side, REL senior Javier Destarac reached the finals in the 50 freestyle and ended up sixth in a time of 21.89.

The event winner and state qualifier was Jack LeVant of Southlake Carroll, who finished in a time of 20.48.

SLC also won the boys regional title, doing it overpowering fashion with 636.5 points compared to second-place Rockwall’s 223. Highland Park finished third with 213. The Lee boys finished ninth with 87 points.

“I was real happy with the 200 medley making it into the top 8,” Petty said. “They also won the consolation final in 400 freestyle relay. Javier, our senior, closed out the last leg with his fastest time.”

Petty’s first year as Lee coach is in the books and he believes the Red Raiders showed what they are about.

“I looked up last year’s regional results and (Lee) scored a combined 66 points. Fifty-one of that were from seniors that were graduating,” Petty said. “We scored 213 points combined this year with a young team. That shows the dramatic improvement made this year by our kids.”

The Class 6A state meet will take place Feb. 19-20 at Texas Swim Center in Austin.
