LUFKIN (KYTX) – Two people were killed early Friday in a fiery head-on collision on U.S. Highway 69, south of Farm-to-Market Road 1270, near Zavalla in Angelina County.

The preliminary crash investigation indicated a pickup was traveling northbound on U.S. 69 when it crossed over into the southbound lane and struck a tractor-trailer head-on, according to a Lufkin Department of Public Safety communications report.

After the crash, the tractor-trailer caught fire and burned in the northbound lane of U.S. 69.

The drivers of both vehicles were killed. Their names have not been released.

U.S. 69 south of FM 1270 near Zavalla had been closed but was reopened to traffic and the crash scene was cleared. DPS officers were continuing their investigation into the crash.
