4 champions crowned in Wagstaff Classic

Four champions were crowned at Wagstaff Gymnasium Thursday as East Texas said goodbye to 2015.

Earning titles in the 62nd Annual Wagstaff Holiday Basketball Classic were Van (Apache Bracket), Brownsboro (Gold Bracket), Marshall (Diamond Bracket) and Whitehouse (Platinum Bracket).

Four consolation winners were also crowned – Bishop Gorman (Apache Bracket), Chapel Hill (Gold Bracket), Bullard Brook Hill (Diamond Bracket) and New Summerfield (Platinum Bracket).

Platinum Championship

Whitehouse 65,



All Saints 41

The Whitehouse Wildcats used a 28-6 run the last six minutes of the third quarter and the first three minutes of the final period to go from a 27-25 advantage to lead 53-33. The run was sparked by Ryan Walls sinking four three-pointers (12 points) and McKade Marquis tossing in two (six points). Isiah Clark had two baskets during the stretch.

All Saints fought back in the first half after trailing 9-3 and tied the contest twice in the first half, the last coming on Chris Williams’ putback with 1:20 on the clock to tie the score at 21 in the second quarter.

Walls led the Wildcats in scoring with 16 points, while Javier Neal and Marquis each put in 11 points. Sean Phillips led the Trojans with 12 points – with 10 of those coming in the first half to keep All Saints close. Williams was the other Trojan in double figures with 10. Clark chipped in 10 points for the Wildcats.

Diamond Championship

Marshall 68, Lindale 39

The Marshall Mavericks scored the first 23 points of the contest and coasted to the win over Lindale. The Mavericks held Lindale scoreless for 10:30 to open the game. Greg Worth scored 10 points and Mav standout Tiandre Jackson-Young added eight points during the opening 23-0 spurt.

Jackson-Young scored 28 points and Trel Patton added 15 points for Marshall. Worth finished the evening with 12 points. Jackson-Young had 84 points in three games.

Laettner Greenhill, Jordan Gray and Kale Ridge each scored nine points for the Eagles. Gray had 53 points in three games.

Gold Championship

Brownsboro 91, Athens 74

Brownsboro overcame an eight-point first-half deficit to recover and defeat their Henderson County rival Athens in championship of the Gold Bracket, 91-74.

Brownsboro scored 31 third-quarter points to pull away with Tamrick Pace scoring 15 points during the period. Pace had a game-high 34 points.

The Bears used their size advantage with Pace and Kenneth Woods (16 points) dominating the smaller Athens team inside.

Athens was led by sophomore Gary Lyons who finished with 30 points with Miles Koehler added 13 points.

Apache Championship

Van 68, Troup 49

Isaiah Allred pumped in 14 points to lead Van to a 68-49 victory over Troup in the Apache Bracket championship. Holden Myers contributed 13 points and Logan Lockwood connected on three 3-pointers and finished 11 points.

Weslee Ross scored 15 points to lead the Tigers while making three treys. Kameron Elmer added 12 points on drives to the basket for the young Tigers.

Bishop Gorman 51, Bullard 41

Judah Bell scored 33 points to lead the Crusaders to a 51-41 victory over Bullard in opening game on Thursday.

Bell connected on 6-of-6 free throws in the fourth period to seal the victory for the Crusaders. Bullard was led by Marquis Allen’s 15 points and Jagger Haynie added two 2-pointers.

Nic Vandiver added two 3-pointers for the Crusaders.

Gold Consolation

Chapel Hill 80, Grace Community 69

Chapel Hill pulled away from a pesky Grace Community squad in the fourth quarter to win 80-69. Guard Travion Taylor scored 17 points with 13 points in the second half to lead a balanced Bulldog offense. Garrett Tauscher scored 24 points and Caleb Culver contributed 17 points for the Cougars.

Michael Nicholson scored nine points and Ty Osborne and Kevondra Butler each chipped in eight points for the Bulldogs.

Nicholas Forman was also in double figures for Grace with 11 points.

Diamond Consolation

Brook Hill 48, Palestine 47

Palestine’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was just short as Bullard Brook Hill won 48-47 in the tightest contest of the consolation finals. The Guard had four players with nine points or more with Colton Adams and Bryant Robinson leading the way with 10 points and Ryan Cox and Parker Galbraith each contributing nine points.

The two teams battled throughout the contest with either team’s largest lead being four points.

The Wildcats were led by Keelan Yarbrough with 13 points with Callum Parkes chipping in 12 points. Devonte Mims and Luis Landa-Miller each poured in nine points.

Platinum Consolation

New Summerfield 55, Kilgore 36

Case Wilkerson scored 20 of his game high 30 points in the second half to lead Class 2A New Summerfield to a 55-36 victory over Class 4A Kilgore.

Case’s younger brother, Collin Wilkerson, added 13 points, all in the first half. Junior Tray Dunn scored 25 points for the Bulldogs.
