Wagstaff Classic gets underway

It was warmup day at 62nd Annual Wagstaff Holiday Classic on Tuesday and a number of players and teams returned from the Christmas break on fire.
New Summerfield began its game on an 18-0 run, while Lindale, sparked by Jordan Gray’s 14 first-quarter points, jetted to a 22-2 lead. Gray matched his jersey number with 23 points and sat out most of third and fourth periods.

Plus, Marshall, behind Tiandre Jackson-Young’s 26 points, improved to 15-0, having won 45 of its past 46 games. The lone loss? A bi-district defeat in the playoffs last year to John Tyler.
The action will heat up on Wednesday as bracket play in the four divisions begin. An added bonus is the Tyler Junior College Apaches, fresh off a trip to nationals last season, will meet Houston Community College-Southwest at 3:30 p.m., in the final game of the first session.
The 16 teams are vying for championships in four brackets.
The Apache semifinals have Bullard vs, Troup at 8 a.m., followed by Van vs. Bishop Gorman at 9:30 a.m.
The Gold semifinals match Brownsboro vs. Chapel Hill at 11 a.m. and Athens vs. Grace Community at 12:30 p.m.
Palestine and Marshall meet at 2 p.m, in a Diamond semifinal. The other Diamond semifinal has Bullard Brook Hill taking on Lindale at 5:30 p.m.

The final two games of the night are the Platinum bracket with New Summerfield taking on All Saints at 7 p.m. and Kilgore playing Whitehouse at 8:30 p.m.
The consolation finals and championship games are on Thursday.
Highlights of Day 1 included:
Game 1: Four Brook Hill players scored in double figures, led by Colton Adams’ 20 points, as the Guard beat Troup 89-39. Alec Kitt (16), Ryan Cox (15) and McCray Fletcher (13) were in double figures scoring. Jared Jackson led Troup with 17.
Game 2: Chapel Hill used a balanced-scoring attack to defeat Bishop Gorman 52-47. The Bulldogs used a 9-0 run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter to take a 36-29 lead. Nic Vandiver’s 3-pointer pulled the Crusaders to within 36-32 to stop the run, but CH held on.
Game 3: Grace Community, led by Garrett Tauscher’s 22 points, held off Bullard 54-46.Marquis Allen led Bullard with 27 points.
Game 4: New Summerfield was in control throughout to down Van 50-35. Case Wilkerson (18), Collin Wilkerson (15) and Devin Abercrombie (12) led the Hornets. Texas State golf signee Logan Lockwood paced Van with 12 points.
Game 5: All Saints rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit to down Palestine 67-55. Chris Williams led the Trojans with 16 points, followed by Sean Phillips (15) and Luke Lee (14). Keelan Yarbrough and Claude Rogers paced Palestine with 13 points apiece.
Game 6: Jackson-Young led Marshall as the Mavericks downed Brownsboro 71-58. Three Bears scored in double digits – Tamrick Pace (17), Kevon Thompson (14) and Kenneth Woods (11).
Game 7: Gray paced Lindale to a 65-22 win over Kilgore. Laettner Greenhill added 11 points for the Eagles.
Game 8: It was a battle of the maroon-clad teams in the finale of the night as Whitehouse scored a 77-55 victory over the Athens Hornets.
Javier Neal slashed through the Hornets defense for 17 points. Colby Duhon scored 13 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Isiah Clark added 10 with Justus Carnahan, Ryan Walls and McKade Marquis all adding nine points apiece.
Katarius Arroyo led Athens with 13 points, while Miles Koehler added 12.
