MOUNT VERNON (KYTX) – Gregg County Precinct 3 Constable Michael Baggett says he’s yet to decide if he’ll seek re-election, after pleading guilty Wednesday morning to misdemeanor drunk driving.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies and state troopers say they arrested Baggett in March 2014, after noticing his truck and trailer swerving on state highway 37 near Winnsboro.

Franklin County Judge Scott Lee sentenced Michael Baggett to three days in jail and a $2,000 fine, after Baggett entered his guilty plea.

Defense attorney Jason Cassel says Baggett has addressed his personal issues and can now move on with his life.

“I just want people to remember that this is an individual that’s got 20 years of public service, dedicated public service in the sheriff’s office, working in the jail, working the streets, and working as a constable,” Cassel said, “and from one bad day, one bad choice, I just hope that people realize that this isn’t reflective of who Mike Baggett is as a person and as a public servant.”

Publicly, Baggett remains Gregg County Precinct 3 constable, but his peace officer’s license remains under an enforcement hold. The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement will decide whether to suspend it.

Baggett says he hasn’t decided whether to run for re-election. Monday is the filing deadline for the 2016 Republican primary. Baggett’s deputy constable Dickie McCubbin, and Kilgore police officer Daniel Morgan have already filed for Republican primary to fill the constable’s seat.
