MONTICELLO, Ark. – Idong Okon, a junior student-athlete for the University of Arkansas at Monticello football team, passed away on Sunday at midnight after suffering a fatal asthma attack, the school announced.

Okon was 21 years old. Originally from Tyler, Okon transferred to UAM for the 2015 season from Tyler Junior College, but was sidelined for the year with a knee injury during fall training camp.

According to UAM head football coach Hud Jackson, Okon was expected to be a vital part of the offensive line during the 2016 season.

Okon played at Robert E. Lee High School before becoming a member of the Apache football team.

“Idong was so much more than a football player,” said Jackson. “He was a tremendous student-athlete, a great friend to his teammates and a leader on and off the field. Idong was a young man who loved his family, friends and teammates. He will be deeply missed, and our program has a huge void because of his passing. We ask Weevil Nation to pray for his family, teammates and coaches, who loved him so much.”

“There are no words to express the feeling of sadness we have as a UAM family right now,” said UAM athletic director Chris Ratcliff.

“Losing anyone is tough, but losing someone that is so young with a bright future ahead of them is even tougher. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Idong’s family, friends, teammates and coaches during this difficult time. He is already, and will continue to be sorely missed.”

Arrangements for Okon’s funeral will be released once finalized.
