Both the UT Tyler men and women’s soccer teams fell in the American Southwest Conference Tournament finals on Sunday.

In the men’s final in Tyler, UT Dallas won over the Patriots 1-0 on penalty kicks, 6-5.

In Abilene, Hardin-Simmons scored a 2-0 win over the Patriots.

MEN

After a scoreless regulatioin and two overtime periods, the teams went to penalty kicks.

UT Tyler matched the Comets in penalty kicks for the first five rounds with Leandro Cid-Fernandez, Trevor Self, Lucas Pereira, Erik Sanchez and Austin Fletcher making their kicks.

UTD goalkeeper Joseph Weber made a save off a shot from Samuel Huerta and the Comets scored the game-winer.

The Patriots, the regular season champions, are hopeful of receiving an at-large bid on Monday from the NCAA.

WOMEN

ABILENE – The No. 6-ranked UT Tyler women’s soccer team was unable to end Hardin-Simmons’ run of American Southwest Conference Championship titles as the Cowgirls claimed a 2-0 win on Sunday at the HSU Soccer Complex to extend their streak to 13 straight tournament titles.

The Patriots (17-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season and will now have to wait until Monday afternoon to see if they are awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament for the second straight season.

UT Tyler, which won the ASC regular-season championship and has a 1-0 decision over HSU back on Sept. 19 on its resume, is now 0-5 in ASC finals appearances after being held scoreless for the first time all season.

“Big credit to HSU,” UT Tyler head coach Stefani Webb said. “They came out wanting it more than we did and put us on our heels from the get go. I was proud of our teams second half effort and thought we played really well the second half and thought we really had some great looks.”

UT Tyler, which has scored 82 goals this season, were limited to only four shots on goal throughout the 90 minutes and went into halftime trailing by two to the Cowgirls who finished with 10 shots on goal.

The Patriots had only given up more than one goal in a game once this season before the Cowgirls scored their two goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Chestley Strother led the Patriots with two shots on goal and had five shots throughout the game, while Morgan Monzingo and Nikki Gordon each had one shot on goal. Strother, Gordon and Meagan Stewart were named to the ASC All-Tournament Team for their work in wins over ETBU and Texas-Dallas en route to the finals matchup against Hardin-Simmons. UT Tyler’s Emily Hurley made two saves and Hanna Fischer four in goal for the Patriots who were outshot for the first time all season by a 17-14 margin.

Josey Meyer scored her 11th goal of the season in the 11th minute of play to give the Cowgirls an early 1-0 advantage and was followed by Olivia Hartman who struck for the second goal in the 40th minute. Hartman now has four goals this season after being assisted by Katie Lane.

The NCAA DIII Selection Show will start at noon on Monday and will announce at-large bids, seeding and regional locations. The Patriots earned an at-large bid last season to make their first regional appearance in program history and have followed up last year’s success by setting new records with the most goals in a season with 82 and the record for most wins.

“This has been one of those years you dream about as a coach,” Webb said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better year from this team and our seniors. Now we wait to see if we get a bid.”
