ALTO (KYTX)-We’re learning more about the death of an Alto football player and the effect on his community. Doctors say 16-year-old Cam’ron Matthews died of an aneurysm after collapsing during Friday night’s game.

The flags outside the Alto ISD campus are at half-staff. The community is mourning Alto’s number 1, Cam’ron Matthews.

“You want someone for your kids to follow up in their footsteps and emulate, Cam’ron was the one,” Alto ISD Superintendent Kerry Birdwell said.

Cam’ron collapsed on the Alto football field during Friday night’s game. He was flown to ETMC and later died. We learned today that he had an aneurysm.

Head football coach Paul Gould says this is the first time this has happened to one of his players.

“Emotions are everywhere, we want to be here for our kids. They are definitely dealing with something that a 16,17,18 year old doesn’t usually have to deal with,” Gould said,

This tragedy has brought this small community together, something Gould says Cam’ron’s teammates are thankful for.

“They are learning a life lesson that though it’s tough, it’s something we are going to try to get through and we are going to get through it together,” Gould said.

Even as Cam’ron’s family grieves this loss, they are staying strong.

“He had a time to be born and a time to go and god took him in the place that he loved, he loved football,” Family friend Kimberly Hinson said.

Hinson has known Cam’ron since he was 4 years old. His parents asked her to speak on their behalf.

“They are grateful and they know Cam’ron’s life has just begun and Cam’ron is looking down on us and he’s perfect now,” Hinson said.

Hinson has been by Cam’ron’s parents’ sides since Friday night, along with their minister Kaffee Andrews.

“To think about the child growing up in our congregation and now being taken away from us, it’s been real heartbreaking for us,” Andrews said.

Hinson and Andrews say the family is staying strong and they want Cam’ron’s friends and teammates to do the same.

“Definitely Cam’ron wants his teammates to be on that field Friday and play hard. Cam’ron is the first to hit you hard on that field but then go and extend his hand to lift you right back up,” Hinson said.

Cam’ron’s family also wants to thank everyone for the prayers and support. They are planning a memorial for Cam’ron. We will keep you updated when we learn more about that.
