LONGVIEW (KYTX) – Neighbors speak out after a 2-year-old was accidentally shot and killed in building six of Huntington Hills Apartments in Longview.

Ms. Jenkins lives below the home where police found the 2-year-old’s body and said she is still shaken up by what happened.

“I arrived home from work and I saw the commotion,” Jenkins said. “The officer came up to me and he told me where I can park and I asked him was the building on fire and he said no there’s been a bad accident.”

According to Longview police, Jenkins’ 2-year-old neighbor had been accidentally shot and killed by another child who was playing with a loaded gun.

“From what we later found out another child was playing with the gun and that gun accidentally went off, striking the child and killing her.” said Officer Kristie Brian, Longview Police spokesperson.

Other Huntington Hills residents say they came out minutes after the shooting saying the child was reaching for jewelry on a nightstand and accidentally hit the gun.

CBS 19 has not been able to confirm that information.

Either way, Ms. Jenkins says she could not sleep thinking about what happened. “There’s no way I could’ve stayed in the apartment after all that,” she explained.

Jenkins said she wished this was just a bad dream, but knows faith will pull her and her neighbors through.

“I just want to say…keep the faith, keep praying,” said Jenkins.

Police are still investigating and because children are involved names and pictures will not be released until the preliminary autopsy results are back.

CBS 19 will bring you the latest information on the investigation as it is released.
