Volunteers associated with Youth with a Mission and Mercy Works are set to depart for Nepal in teams over the next several months to help in relief efforts after a devastating earthquake hit the region last weekend.
According to news reports on Wednesday, the death toll had topped 5,200 in and around the country, including the city of Kathmandu.
Debbie Lascelles, Mercy Works director, said a team of six volunteers are scheduled to leave for Nepal on Friday. That group, an advanced team, will take medical supplies, clothing and blankets.
“They will be assisting in some minor medical procedures, provide things like arm slings, leg braces and blankets and food,” she said.
Ms. Lascelles said a second group will depart on May 10 and will include at least three doctors from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, who will perform surgeries and provide other medical care.
A third group, scheduled to leave May 30, will help other teams in the region.
Ms. Lascelles said those wanting to offer help can submit donations to Mercy Works by visiting the organization’s website at MercyWorks.org or by calling 903-509-5640.
Donations also can be mailed to Youth With A Mission, Tyler at P.O. Box 3000, Garden Valley,TX, 75771.
“Our volunteers pay their own way to the affected areas, so all of the money donated goes to supplies needed by those in the region,” she said.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer for one of the teams may call 903-509-5640. Volunteers with various skills, such as construction experience, will be needed for upcoming trips to Nepal.
