Trips to the state tournament were a rite of spring for the Van Vandal tennis team under coach Brad Crawford.
And the tradition is continuing under coach Melissa Wells.
The only difference is the Van squad will head to College Station instead of Austin. The Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas campus in Austin is no longer as the new Dell Medical School is under construction. While the new Longhorn tennis center is being planned, the UIL has moved its tennis championships to Texas A&M University’s Mitchell Tennis Center and Omar Smith Instructional Tennis Courts in College Station.
Earning the trip to state from Van are the girls doubles teams of Taylor Attaway- Mullika Seekhieo and Mariah Maxfield-Courtney Pickett.
The two Lady Vandal teams faced each other in the Class 4A Region II championship on Tuesday in Longview.
Attaway and Seekhieo won 6-1, 6-4 over Maxfield and Pickett in the championship match.
Maxfield and Pickett then captured a state bid by winning the playback for state against third-place Maggie Quy and Michelle Perdue of Krum 6-3, 6-2.
Joining the Lady Vandal foursome for the Class 4A state tournament are: Ashleigh Davis-Hunter Foster of Kaufman and Kelsey James-Kolton Adams of Wills Point in mixed doubles; Takashia Thomas-Sangit Lanka of Kilgore and Logan Daniell-Rustin Rankin of Wills Point in boys doubles; Mabry Nicholls of Spring Hill and Shelby Pirtle of Wills Point in girls singles; and Dawson Penn of Spring Hill in boys singles.
In the Class 4A, Region III meet at Bryan High School, Stevie Ybarra of Palestine earned a trip to College Station.
Ybarra won a playback for state in girls singles, defeating runner-up Kristina Johnson of Lufkin Hudson, 6-0, 7-5.
In boys doubles, the Center pair of Adam Reeves and Chris Dunn placed second and earned a berth to state.
The state tournament is scheduled for May 12-13. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on May 12 with the championship matches on May 13.
