WHITEHOUSE — The biggest competition John Tyler had was from itself.
Boasting the top five athletes in points scored, the Lions easily claimed the District 16-5A boys track and field championship Wednesday at Wildcat Stadium.
The Whitehouse LadyCats, powered by Karlea Duhon, won the girls district title.
The top four finishers in each event advance to the District 15/16-5A area meet next week at Pine Tree’s Pirate Stadium. Wednesday’s meet, originally scheduled for two days, was condensed to one day due to threat of inclement weather on Thursday.
The John Tyler boys trailed Lufkin by seven points as the running finals began but dominated on the track, including three relay victories. The Lions finished with 181 points to easily outdistance the Panthers at 154. Whitehouse finished third at 111.
John Tyler senior DeAndre Williams led all scorers with 24 points on the day. Teammate Thomas Boyd finished second at 21 while teammates Jassavia Reese, Cedric Mosley and Damion Miller all tied for third with Lufkin’s Miguel Harvey.
The Lions torched their way to victory in the 4×100. The team of Miller, Bryston Gipson, Williams and Mosley finished in a blazing 41.46 seconds to top Nacogdoches (41.83).
The 4×200 team, consisting of the same members, followed that up with a victory thanks to Williams making up ground on the final leg to give the Lions a time of 1:28.49, a fraction faster than Nacogdoches’ team that finished in 1:28.67.
The Lions’ Marion Brisco, Boyd, JaVaris Robinson and Duntayviun Gross capped the night with a dominating win in the 4×400 relay.
Mosley took first in the 100, speeding to a 10.90 time. Defending district champion Shemar Smith, of Whitehouse, was the only one keeping JT from a sweep of the top three as he finished in second at 10.96, closely followed by Miller (10.97) and Gipson (11.06).
Reese grabbed two gold medals in throwing events. His shot put mark of 57-1 was 10 feet further than second-place Eric McCoy of Lufkin. He went 138-11 in discus, 3 feet more than Lufkin’s Josh Driver in second.
A trio of varsity football players gave the Lions three of the top four spots in triple jump. Bryson Smith (44-3) won the event, Rodney Bendy (44-0 ½) took second and Damion Miller (43-1 ¾) finished fourth.
Boyd grabbed another gold for the Blue and White with a first-place finish in 300 hurdles, holding off LeVar Jackson of Corsicana with a time of 40.31, .06 ahead of Jackson. Boyd earlier had finished in second in 110 hurdles.
Williams added a second-place finish in the 200 behind Nacogdoches’ Alex Gregory, who defended his title with a time of 21.69.
Gross gave the Lions another silver medal. The junior finished the 400 in 50.44, just behind champion Chance Stephenson of Whitehouse (50.31) and ahead of teammate Marion Brisco (51.20) in third.
On the girls side, Whitehouse racked up 160 points, well ahead of Lindale (109) and Jacksonville (106) in second and third, respectively. John Tyler came in fourth at 76.
Duhon pulled in 24 points to earn top individual honors. Duhon grabbed medals in the 400 (first), 4×100 relay (second), 4×400 relay (second) and long jump (third).
Rebecca Lampin (300 hurdles) and Shea Schmidt (200) also turned in first-place finishe for the LadyCats.
Jacksonville’s DaMonica Franklin, who played in the Azalea All-Star basketball game on Saturday, took gold in both shot put (34-2 ¾) and discus (123-8) to finish behind Duhon for top performer with 20 points.
John Tyler’s Jadia Lampton cruised to gold in the 800-meter. She finished in 2:31.75 to win by nearly 3 seconds over second-place Patsy Elrod of Lufkin.
The Lady Lions finished the day strong by winning the 4×400 relay with the team of Destini Whitehead, Shakendra Tilley, Alyssa Mayfield and Lampton.
Lufkin won the girls 4×100 relay while Jacksonville took the 4×200 relay.
