Six area high schools have Garland on their minds.

Not the tinsel and garland of the holiday season, but the city of Garland, site of the 2014 UIL State Volleyball Tournament.

But first, there is the matter of the regional playoffs.

Two East Texas clubs — Van and Longview Spring Hill — take on a couple of Metroplex teams in the Class 4A Region II Tournament at Poteet High School in Mesquite.

The semifinals are today at 6 and 8 p.m. with the regional championship slated for 1 p.m. Saturday.

The winner of Saturday’s game advances to the state tournament.

The first semifinal matches Spring Hill against Melissa at 6 p.m. with Van taking on Argyle at 8 p.m.

The Spring Hill Lady Panthers are 24-1 on the season, while the Melissa Lady Cardinals are 33-7.

Kristen Reaves is coach of Van, which sports a 34-9 mark. The Argyle Lady Eagles are 36-7.

The captains of the Lady Vandals are 6-foot senior outside hitter and middle blocker Hallee Carter and 6-0 senior outside hitter and middle blocker Briann Thompson.

Other members of the Van team include 5-8 sophomore M’kenna Daniel, 5-10 freshman Cheyenne Sallee, 5-3 freshman Taylor Tallant, 5-9 freshman Alli Lloyd, 5-9 sophomore Briley Hardy, 5-9 sophomore Carlie Jarman, 5-8 sophomore Mindy Vickery, 5-4 freshman Courtney Goggans, 5-9 senior Jasiee Harris and 5-0 junior Jennifer Landaverde.

The Class 3A Region III Tournament is scheduled for Longview High School’s Lobo Coliseum. Today’s semifinals have Elkhart (22-10) meeting Franklin (30-10) at 6 p.m., followed by White Oak (30-8) taking on Jewett Leon (21-3) at 8 p.m.

The semifinal winners meet in the regional championship at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Lobo Coliseum is also hosting the Class 2A Region III Tournament.

The semifinals today have Beckville (34-5) battling Iola (17-2) at 2 p.m., followed by Avery (34-4) tangling with Centerville (23-5) at 4 p.m.

The winners meet in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The state tournament is Nov. 20-22 at the Garland ISD’s Curtis Culwell Center.
