Former All-East Texas basketball player and current Tyler Junior College standout Levi Yancy signed a basketball letter of intent to attend Northwestern State University on Wednesday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

Looking on were his family as well as TJC coach Mike Marquis and Yancy’s Apache teammates.

Yancy, who has played all five positions for the Apaches, is excited about attending the Natchitoches, Louisiana.

“I felt like it fit me — not just basketball-wise, but spiritually,” said Yancy, who is majoring in math and wants to be a teacher.

“This is a great day for not only Levi, but his family and our program,” TJC coach Mike Marquis said. “This is a marquee day for any young man and the second best day besides graduating from our school.

“We are very proud of Levi and his accomplishments.”

At TJC, Yancy averaged seven points and five rebounds as a freshman last season.

The 6-8, 210-pounder led White Oak High School to back-to-back Class 2A state championships. Yancy was also the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 2A Player of the Year in 2013.
