The city of Tyler continues to move forward in its search for the next city manager.

Special City Council meetings pertaining to the search are scheduled for Nov. 4 and Nov. 18 at City Hall, 212 N. Bonner Ave.

On Nov. 4, the City Council will go straight into executive session to discuss personnel matters, Mayor Martin Heines said. Keller-based Strategic Government Resources, which was hired to help conduct the city manager search, will be on hand for the discussion.

Heines said posting for the position ends this week, so the Nov. 4 meeting will be the first opportunity for council members to review specific individuals.

“I believe it to be very important that the public know that we’re having a meeting. And we’re not doing anything by committee. We’re going to do this all together as the elected officials,” Heines said.

“I think it’s important to have all the city council members, all the elected members, to be together when we review all the data.”

As the City Council works in the coming months to narrow the search down to the final two, three or four candidates, it is meeting in executive session out of respect for current positions that candidates may have, Heines said.

During that process, he said council members also will ensure that the people selected as final candidates represent the community’s values and ideals.

“I just want to make sure that we’re respecting the process…,” he said. “But I think the process is one that we need to go through.”

“We’re looking for a city manager that represents the same mindset we have as a business-like conservative approach to city government,” he added.

Councilman Mark Whatley previously said it has been determined that in the end, Tyler will have a large pool of well-qualified candidates and is going to be able to get a very good city manager.

Former City Manager Mark McDaniel took an assistant city manager position with the city of Dallas, and Susan Guthrie currently serves as Tyler’s interim city manager.
