TJC golfers place second

HUNTSVILLE — The Tyler Junior College men’s golf team captured second place in the Harold Funston Invitational on Tuesday at Raven Nest Golf Club.

The tournament was won by host Sam Houston State University.



The Bearkats fired an 851 (288-280-283) to take the top spot in the 54-hole tourney that experienced a two-hour delay during Monday’s rounds.

TJC was next at 876 (289-294-293). Placing third was Abilene Christian (294-295-289—878). Rounding out the top five were Incarnate Word (302-293-290—885) and Western Texas CC (298-299-294—891).

There were nine teams entered.

SHSU’s Zach Cabra took medalist honors with a 210 (69-72-69). Runner-up was Austin Jordan of Incarnate Word (72-70-70—212), while ACU’s Corbin Renner was third with 213 (71-72-70).

Ben Page led the Apaches with a 218 (76-72-70). He tied for 10th. Other Tyler golfers were: Calvin Lackey (14, 70-74-76—220), Charlie Cameron (T15, 72-77-73—222), Trip Hobson (T21, 71-79-74—224) and Brandon Rougeau (T25, 76-71-78—225).

In the women’s tournament, the Apache Ladies finished sixth with a 956 (312-324-320).

Houston Baptist won the event with an 889 (302-295-292), followed by Sam Houston State (292-310-300—902) and Western Texas CC (300-317-295—912).

There were eight teams entered.

Devanshi Naik of Western Texas claimed medalist honors with a 217 (71-74-72). HBU’s Charlotte Hartshorn was runner-up at 218 (73-74-71) with teammate Rachel Mulkey (76-72-71—219) and Western Texas’ Iben Hvass (72-74-73—219) tying for third.

TJC’s Sarah Ruiz tied for 10th with a 226 (76-76-74). Other Tyler golfers were: Kerbey Kipp (T25, 76-79-88—243), Holly Standing (T27, 77-86-81—244), Bailey McCawley (T34, 83-83-86—252) and Kelly Allen (T34, 86-87-79—252).
