The American Athletic Conference quarterback completed 23 of 47 passes with three touchdowns, becoming East Carolina’s all-time leader in completions and touchdown passes (63).
Carden also had a rushing touchdown with 16 seconds left to play to give the Pirates a 28-21 victory over No. 17 Virginia Tech. Carden’s 427 yards passing on Saturday ranked as the third-most ever against a Virginia Tech defense.
Virginia Tech a week earlier had knocked off Ohio State in Columbus, but it was Carden and ECU that blasted out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Carden threw TD passes of 4, 15 and 2 yards to stun the home team.

Virginia Tech came back to tie before Carden had the final answer with a 1-yard sneak.
“I’m proud of him,” ECU coach Ruffin McNeill said about Carden. “He is a direct example of what we believe in. We both believe in the commitment to the team. You could see it in the locker room after the game. No matter what awards he’s up for, he never loses sight of the team concept.”
Carden is a graduate of Episcopal High School in Houston.
Honorable mentions for Week 3 are:
Ohio State freshman quarterback JT Barrett, of Wichita Falls Rider, (23 of 30 passing for 312 yards and 6 touchdowns with one interception in 66-0 win over Kent State);
Baylor senior quarterback Bryce Petty of Midlothian (23 of 34 passing for 416 yards and 4 touchdowns in 63-21 win at Buffalo);
Arkansas junior running back Jonathan Williams of Allen (22 carries for 145 yards and 4 touchdowns in 49-28 win at Texas Tech).
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.
