Johnny Ray Harris, 40, surrendered after pointing a gun at his son and holding a female hostage Friday, according to a news release from the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office.

A 911 caller said his father had pointed a firearm at him and threatened to shoot, forcing him out of the residence on County Road 2151 in the Wynn Community near Canton, according to the news release.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies determined Harris was inside the residence, armed with a handgun and refusing to come out. Tactical officers from the sheriff’s office and Canton Police Department determined that the suspect was holding a female hostage inside the home.

Trained hostage negotiators with the sheriff’s office established communication with the suspect and were able to get him to peacefully surrender, Sheriff Michael Lindsey Ray said.

Harris was taken to the Van Zandt Count Justice Center where he was booked on criminal charges.
