A 28-year old Jacksonville man was killed in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday evening.

Detective James Oden said the accident occurred in the 2200 block of Lakeshore Drive at 7:25 p.m.

Oden said Justin Berry was driving north when he lost control of his vehicle. Berry’s vehicle slid off the road and struck a tree on the west side of the road. Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Phillip Grimes pronounced Berry dead at the scene, and an autopsy was ordered.

Berry’s 26-year-old passenger also was injured in the crash. Oden said the man initially refused treatment but was later taken into East Texas Medical Center — Jacksonville for injuries received in the crash.

Oden said there is a slight “S” curve and a dip in the roadway before the crash site. Officers believe Berry was traveling too fast when he hit the dip, which caused him to go airborne and lose control of the vehicle.

The accident remained under investigation.
