Water Valley stops Laneville

AUSTIN — Laneville was hoping for their fourth state championship, but it was not to be Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.
Trae Hannon scored 16 points and Water Valley cruised to the Class 1A Division II championship with a 68-44 over the Yellowjackets.
Water Valley had four players score in double figures. Kellan Kirkland had 14 points and 11 rebounds as Water Valley (29-5) outrebounded Laneville 43-25. Brock Demere and Cameron Copley each scored 13.
Water Valley was 11 of 15 shooting in the third quarter as it stretched a 30-25 halftime lead to 55-37 by the end of the third. Water Valley made seven 3-pointers.
Kendrick Anderson scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds for Laneville (33-7). He also had two blocks.
Dontavious Harris, who scored 30 points and made eight 3-pointers in a semifinal victory, attempted just five shots against the Wildcats and finished with nine points.
Ty Johnson had nine rebounds for Laneville.
The Yellowjackets were hurt from long distance as they were just 1 of 12 from 3-point land.
Laneville, which is coached by Tylerite Hosea Lee, was appearing in the state tournament for the 10th time. The Yellowjackets also finished second in 2007.
