Longview senior Travin Howard was the District 12-5A Defensive Player of the Year and now he can add an all-state selection to that. The defensive back was chosen on the first team for the 63rd Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A All-State Football Team.

Howard was a force on the Lobos defense this season, finishing with 89 tackles three caused fumbles, eight pass breakups and eight interceptions, two of those returned for touchdowns. He also scored two other defensive TDs for Longview.

Joining his teammate on the second team is Longview senior guard Vernon Hutchinson with senior Zaycoven Henderson, the All-East Texas Defensive MVP, chosen for the third team defense.

Allen junior quarterback Kyler Murray and Cedar Hill defensive lineman Xavier Washington are the players of the year. Murray passed for 3,672 yards and 46 touchdowns in leading unbeaten Allen to the Division I state title. He added 1,283 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns.

Washington, who signed with Northwestern, had 47 tackles for losses, 42 quarterback pressures and 23 sacks for 14-2 Cedar Hill which beat Katy for the Division II state title.

Receiving honorable mention offense were Lufkin junior lineman Eric McCoy, Longview senior receiver Dorian Leonard and Lufkin kicker Timmy Martinez.

Howard was also chosen for the honorable mention defense as a returner.
