4A All-State: Nacogoches, Whitehouse, John Tyler lead the way

Nacogdoches senior Jacob Bragg was part of a football renaissance with the Dragons this past season. The University of Kansas signee finished with 57 pancakes in helping Nacogdoches reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Bragg, a center, was named to the first team on the 63rd Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A All-State Football Team. Joining him on the first team is Mount Pleasant senior receiver K.D. Cannon.

District 16-4A was well represented overall, with 14 players chosen for either the first or second team or honorable mention.

Cannon earned first-team honors thanks to a stellar season in which the Baylor signee caught 80 passes for 1,252 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Whitehouse senior quarterback Patrick Mahomes and senior receiver Jake Parker were named to the second-team offense.



Mahomes had already been named to the 4A offensive player of the year and was chosen the player of the year overall by the Associated Press. The senior Texas Tech signee completed 287 of 495 pass attempts for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He also rushed for 940 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Parker was Mahomes’ top target on the Wildcats, finishing with 71 receptions for 1,629 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Also on the second team were two Sulphur Springs Wildcats and one more Nacogdoches Dragon. Senior Willy Ivery keyed Sulphur Springs’ rushing attack with 192 carries for 1,673 yards and 22 touchdowns while catching 21 balls for 386 yards and five scores. Landon Watkins, a junior, was a stalwart for Sulphur Springs on the offensive line. Nacogdoches senior Jacorey Whitaker totaled 76 tackles with 15 sacks and 15 quarterback pressures for the Dragons.

Named to honorable mention offense was Sulphur Springs junior guard Jess Jenkins and junior quarterbacks Carter McCown of Jacksonville (2,289 yards passing, 17 TDs; 853 yards rushing, nine TDs) and Larry Pryor of Sulphur Springs. John Tyler placed two on all-state honorable mention offense with senior Reggie Gipson (86-384 rush, 12 TDs; 24-405 receiving, five TDs) chosen all-purpose back and junior Jose Perez (11 of 12 FGs, long of 41; 42 of 50 on PATs) named honorable mention kicker.

On the honorable mention defense was a host of area linebackers and defensive backs.

At linebacker were Whitehouse senior Reggie Long (92 tackles, eight pressures, two interceptions, four forced turnovers) and Sulphur Springs senior Dedric Smith. At defensive back are John Tyler senior Terry Ausborne (82 tackles, five interceptions, eight PBUs), Whitehouse junior Nate Brooks (53 tackles, four interceptions, two caused fumbles), Hallsville senior Jacori Crayton and Nacogdoches sophomore Brandon Jones.

At punter is John Tyler junior Luis Duran (35.8 average on 40 punts, long of 76, five inside 20) and Pine Tree senior Dalvin Manns. At kick returners are John Tyler sophomore Duntayvion Gross (18.7 yard average on 11 returns) and Nacogdoches sophomore Brandon Jones.

Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard and San Antonio Brennan linebacker Grant Watanabe were named players of the year on the 63rd Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A All-State Football Team.

Heard was the offensive player of the year, leading Guyer to the Division I state championship by passing for 2,148 yards with 22 touchdowns and rushing for another 2,172 yards with 28 TDs. The University of Texas signee threw for 6,512 yards in his career and ran for another 4,949 yards, accounting for 134 touchdowns.

Watanabe was the defensive player of the year. The Colorado signee had 129 tackles, 12 of them for losses for the Division I state runner-up.
