The Volvo ad featuring an epic split by Jean Claude Van Damme has inspired a group of young Palestinian filmmakers to copy the stunt – sort of – to make a point.

The parody features a Palestinian man doing a split between two cars that are being pushed by five other men – while the voiceover laments a lack of fuel in Gaza.

Members of the Tashwesh Comedy Troupe, who created the spoof, say the ad provided a perfect ‘vehicle’ for getting their message across.

Mahmoud Zaeter, member of Tashwesh comedy troupe said, “We decided to use the video to show the issue of the blockade in Gaza, to show how the cars are high-tech while we in Gaza don’t have fuel. Even if we had fuel, it would be very expensive and people wouldn’t be able to afford it. So we thought of using this famous ad; many people also used it to make fun of it, but we used it as black comedy to show the world the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”

The Van Damme video was meant to demonstrate the stability and precision of “Volvo Dynamic Steering.” Regardless of whether it sells more cars, the ad has drawn more than 61 million views on YouTube.

Tashwesh says they hope their message-minded spoof proves just as popular as the original.
