UT Tyler women knock off No. 24 UT Dallas

She’Cara Humphrey and Brittany King combined for 41 points as the UT Tyler women upset No. 24 UT Dallas, 71-67, in an American Southwest Conference basketball game on Thursday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

In the second game, the Comets broke out to a big lead and scored a 77-52 win over the Patriots men.



UT Tyler will be back in action on Saturday, pending weather conditions, as the Patriots play host to another ASC foe, Hardin-Simmons. The women play at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m.

 

WOMEN

Humphrey, who was the ASC Player of the Week last week, hit for 21 points and added six rebounds. King added 20 points and eight boards.

The Patriots (4-1, 2-0) jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead before UTD’s (5-1, 2-1) Jo’Anna Davis hit a three to cut the lead to 15-9 at the 14:59 mark.

The Comets fought back, taking the 22-17 lead with 9:53 remaining in the first half.

UT Tyler closed out the first half on a 21-11 run, taking a 38-33 lead into the locker room.

In the second 20 minutes, the Patriots opened up a nine-point lead at the 18:25 mark, but UTD would not go away, taking a 46-44 lead with 13:04 remaining.

The teams traded leads the rest of the second half, with the Comets taking a 59-58 lead on a Ciara Guilhas jumper with 7:17 remaining in regulation.

With 5:46 left, Breann McMillan swished a 3-point to give the Patriots a 61-59 lead. They would never trail again.

The Patriots were hot from the field, shooting 54 percent to the Comets’ 40 percent.

UT Tyler also outrebounded UTD 35-23.

 

MEN

Five Comets scored in double figures as UTD (5-0, 3-0) cruised to the win over the Patriots (1-3, 0-2).

Matthew Medell led the Comets with 19 points followed by Chris McOmber (16), Dmitriy Chernikov (11), Nolan Harvey (10) and 2013 league MVP Kyle Schleigh (10). Schleigh had nine rebounds while McOmber added eight.

Travis Dykman led the Patriots with 13 points. Joe Stephens (8 points) and Chris Rios (7) were next for the Patriots.
