Some progress in childhood obesity. One in eight preschoolers is obese, but according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, there has been some improvement in recent years. The CDC analyzed data among 12 million children ages 2 to 4 who participated in federally funded nutrition programs. The study shows that obesity among low-income preschoolers declined slightly between 2008 and 2011 in 19 of the 43 states and territories studied.

Study: High blood sugar increases dementia risk. Researchers at the University of Washington found that people with high blood sugar — not just those with diabetes — have an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The study is more evidence that the brain is susceptible to damage by high blood sugar, but researchers do not understand why.



Henrietta Lacks’ family gets control over her cells. The Lacks family will sit on a committee that regulates access to the genetic code of Henrietta Lacks, a woman whose cancerous cells were taken and studied without acknowledgement or consent at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. The genetic code in what became known as HeLa cells, were used to develop treatments and vaccines. It also laid the groundwork for the biotechnology industry.
