Memorial service to be held today for accident victim in Henderson

A memorial service will be held today for a Henderson man who died in a one-vehicle rollover accident.
The accident happened Friday on Farm-to-Market Road 850, near Texas Highway 42.

New London Police Chief Michael Smith said Wayne Allen Hawkins II, 34, was traveling west on Farm-to-Market Road 850 in a tanker truck when he apparently went off the roadway, overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle.
He said Hawkins died from injuries he suffered in the accident and was the only one in the vehicle, which was carrying saltwater.
An autopsy was ordered by Rusk County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Jerdy Wolverton.
At the time of the accident, there weren’t any unusual road conditions or weather problems, and there was no indication that high speed was a factor, Smith said.
Traffic was closed down because the size of the rig, but there was no property damage other than the vehicle, he said.
“It’s very unfortunate…” Smith said. “Our condolences go with family of the driver. He’s just a hard-working man.”

The memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at New Life Church on Farm-to-Market Road 3135 in Henderson.
