The Montgomery College baseball team, from Rockville, Md., poses for a photo with Delk Photography at Mike Carter Field on Friday. The team photos have been taken; the barbeque and Tex-Mex have been eaten; the boots and cowboy hats have been fitted; so it’s time to get down to business.

Eight teams representing Texas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Illinois have converged on the Rose City for the seventh straight year for the NJCAA Division III World Series. The 22nd annual tourney gets under way today.

Teams represented in the double-elimination tournament include: Brookhaven College from Farmers Branch; Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves, Sanborn, N.Y.; Waubonsee Community College Chiefs, Sugar Grove, Ill.; Montgomery College Raptors, Rockville, Md.; Century College Mighty Wood Ducks, White Bear Lake, Minn.; Nassau Community College Lions, Garden City, N.Y.; Gloucester County College Roadrunners, Sewell, N.J.; and Northern Essex Community College Knights, Haverhill, Mass.

Niagara (37-16) plays Montgomery (40-15) in the 9 a.m. opener, followed by Century (38-11) vs. Gloucester (45-3) at noon, Waubonsee (36-22) vs. Brookhaven (31-18) at 4 p.m. and Nassau (19-16) vs. Northern Essex (18-14) at 7 p.m.

Before the Brookhaven and Waubonsee game, there are several activities planned — a flyover, the national anthem performed by up-and-coming singer Taylor Heard, the John Tyler ROTC presenting the flags and the first pitch will be thrown by sponsors and Tyler Junior College assistant athletic director Chuck Smith, who recently returned from another deployment in the Middle East.

Also, the U.S. Army will be making dog tags for the kids.
