A Jacksonville man was killed this morning in a work-related accident at an asphalt plant.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 10:08 a.m. from the Jacksonville division of the Longview Asphalt Plant, on County Road 3302 outside of the city, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

EMS and the Jacksonville Fire Department were first called to the business, but 42-year-old James Anthony Lucus, of Jacksonville, died at the scene.

Sheriff James Campbell said Lucas was working in a silos-type structure used to load asphalt into trucks. He said crews were cleaning the machine when something fell on Lucas’ head, causing blunt-force trauma.

He was pronounced dead by Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Phillip Grimes and an autopsy was ordered, according to the release.

Investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched an investigation into the incident. The accident also remains under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, according to the release.
