WHITEHOUSE — Austin’s Shane Haga and Michelle Hayner lead the Men and Women’s Pro 1,2 divisions after the first two stages of the Cyberknife of Texas Stage Race, held on Saturday.

Haga leads by 14 seconds and Hayner is ahead by two seconds entering the final stage, set for today at Tyler Junior College, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The first stage, the Charter Reserve Road Race, consisted of 18 miles at Lake Tyler and the second stage, the Cobb Cycling Time Trial, spanned 5.6 miles.

The third stage, the Texas Spine and Join Criterium, will consist of 1.4 miles on the TJC campus.

“It went great,” said event director David Starrett, a member of the FRESH by Brookshire’s Race Team. “Everybody was loving the course. It was really windy but I am getting a lot of compliments about the Whitehouse area and the Tyler area.”

Almost 300 total riders were entered in the dozen divisions, which features a $10,000 purse — $3,500 in Men’s Pro 1,2 and $1,500 in Women’s Pro 1,2.

Austin, a hotbed for cycling, is dominating the top three places in the men’s top division. The capital city’s Stefan Rothe is in second and Collin Strickland is in third.

“Austin is kind of a hotbed for really good cyclists,” Starrett said. “They kind of go to Austin because Austin is bike friendly and they’ve got the hill country right next to them. And before all his problems, Lance’s (Armstrong) name brought a lot of people to Austin.”

Hico’s David Fuchs is fourth.

Dallas’ Andrew Dalheim, the lone professional in the event and a member of the Bissell Pro Cycling team, is sixth.

In the women’s top division, Dallas’ Andrea Thomas is in second and Allen’s Kayla Sterling is in third.

Austin’s Sheri Roth is fourth.
