KILGORE — Robert E. Lee senior Uriel Chavez scored one goal and assisted two others in a 4-0 win over Palestine Thursday at the Michael Merritt Memorial Showcase at R.E. St. John Stadium.

REL led 1-0 at halftime.

“We didn’t play well in the first half,” said Lee coach Marty Germany. “We went in at halftime (and made some adjustments) and came out much better in the second half.”

The game started brightly for Lee when a cross from Chavez found sophomore forward Eric Munoz, who tucked his shot into the back of the net for Lee’s first goal of the season.

The Red Raiders doubled their advantage in the second half with senior Sergio Molina getting on the score sheet with Chavez again providing the assist.

Lee put it out of reach a few minutes later when junior Tito Arroyo scored off an assist by Giovanni Sosa before Chavez added the fourth off an assist from Arroyo.

Junior keeper Henry Plancarte was called into action late when he made a diving save to thwart a Palestine shot near the top corner of his goal to preserve a clean sheet.

The Red Raiders (1-0) will face Athens at 3 p.m. Friday at R.E. St. John Stadium in Kilgore.

 

Odessa Permian edges out Lady Raiders, 2-1

FORT WORTH — Robert E. Lee scored one goal and could’ve had several more in the first half of their season opener against Odessa Permian at the Fort Worth Nolan Prep Showcase.

Those missed chances cost the Lady Raiders, who watched a 1-0 halftime lead turn into a 2-1 final result Thursday.

“We played about as good as we’ve played this year in the first half and I was very pleased,” said Lee coach Chris Woodard. “In the second half, I don’t know, but they just didn’t look excited and didn’t play very well.”

Freshman Adai Urieta gave REL the perfect start when she took advantage of a slick surface to drive a low free kick past the Permian keeper.

Permian got its equalizer in the first five minutes of the second half. With 20 minutes remaining, the Lady Panthers went ahead.

Lee senior Brooke Johnston got behind the Lady Panthers defense late in the match with a chance to tie, but her shot went over the cross bar.

The Lady Raiders (0-1) play twice on Friday with a match against host Fort Worth Nolan at 10 a.m. followed by a 6 p.m. kickoff against Lubbock Monterey.

 

Brook Hill girls top Carrollton Christian, 3-1

CARROLLTON — Haley Dumesnil scored two goals to help Bullard Brook Hill defeat Carrollton Christian 3-1 Thursday in the TAPPS D-III District 1 opener.

Janet Nwachukwu scored and set up a goal for the Lady Guard (1-3, 1-0 in district). Also adding assists for Brook Hill were Katherine Stair and Kendall Wells.

Hayden Langemeier made eight saves in the Lady Guard goal.

Brook Hill coach David Collins also noted the play of Kennedy Rose in midfield and Ari Assad in defense.

The Lady Guard return home on Monday to play McKinney Christian at 5 p.m.

 

Grace Community boys blank Prince of Peace, 1-0

Jordan Dyess knocked home the only goal of the game off an assist from Reid Dollahite as Grace Community defeated defending TAPPS D-III state champ Carrollton Prince of Peace 1-0 on Thursday at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

The Cougars (5-5-2, 2-0 TAPPS D-II District 2) scored midway through the second half and held on to remain unbeaten in league play while the Eagles remained winless at 0-2 in their new district.

Marc Ritthaler made four saves to preserve the shutout.

Grace will travel to play a non-district match against Colleyville Covenant Christian on Saturday at 11 a.m. before returning to league action Jan. 17 at Dallas Shelton.

 

Bishop Gorman boys rout Dallas Shelton, 6-0

Bishop Gorman had three players with two goals and two assists as the Crusaders crushed Dallas Shelton 6-0 in the TAPPS D-II District 2 opener on Thursday at McCallum Stadium.

Louis Vasquez, Curtis Kemper and Calvin Flowers all scored twice and set up two goals for Gorman (1-0 in district).

Caleb Behm played in goal to record the clean sheet for the Crusaders, who next play at Dallas Christian 7 p.m. Tuesday.
