Tyler’s Oliver swims Monday in Olympic Trials

Tyler’s Meredith Oliver grabbed two silver medals at the Class 5A state meet in February.
Needless to say, she’s raising the bar a little this week competition-wise.
Oliver will compete in the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials on Monday and Wednesday at Centurylink Center in Omaha, Neb.
The recent Robert E. Lee graduate qualified in two events: 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter individual medley. She swims first in the 400 IM on Monday morning with the finals later that night.
“It’s going to be a really fast meet,” Oliver said. “This is the top time standard and one of the fastest meets (in the world), not just for USA swimmers. I am just glad I get to swim in it.
“My chances of (advancing to finals) are very slim, but I am just glad I get to compete.”
In the 400 IM, Oliver will be competing against 2008 Olympic medalist Katie Hoff. On Wednesday she goes up against Natalie Coughlin, also a medalist from the 2008 Olympics.
Well, that is not entirely true.
“She’ll see Natalie and Katie in the warm-up pool, but that is about it,” said Matt Franks, Oliver’s coach at Lee and assistant with Metroplex Aquatics.
“(Next Olympic Trials) in 2016 will be a different story, but this time (it’s about experience).”
Oliver enters Monday’s 400 IM preliminaries with the 74th best qualifying time (4:52.35). Hoff is actually seeded third with Elizabeth Biesel of Florida entering with the top qualifying time of 4:31.78.
In Wednesday’s 200 IM, Oliver’s qualifying time puts her 122nd. Coughlin is seeded sixth with Ariana Kukors entering with the top qualifying time of 2:09.12.
Only two swimmers in every event earn a trip to London.
“I am just going to try not to be nervous because there are a lot of people (there) who are going to be under a lot of pressure and stress and it’s going to be a very high pressure meet,” said Oliver, a Texas A&M signee. “Only two people go (to the Olympics) for each event.
“I am just going to keep cool and have fun because that’s how you swim your best.”
