Tatum edges Crockett in wild one

ATHENS — Crockett gave Tatum all it could handle.
Crockett’s Juan Barrientos missed the game tying extra point with 1:35 left in the contest that gave the Eagles a 34-33 win in a Class 2A Division I quarterfinal game on Friday at Bruce Field.
Anjuwan Smith scored on a nine-yard run to pull the Bulldogs within one before the missed conversion.
Tatum had taken the lead when Jordon Neal intercepted a Crockett pass and returned for a 34-27 advantage with 2:49 left in the game.
The Bulldogs scored first by taking the kickoff 61 yards on five plays that was capped off by Smith’s two-yard run for a 7-0 advantage with 10:55 left in the first quarter.
Tatum responded to tie the score at 7-7 when Jalen Overstreet found Nate Pickett open for a 27-yard scoring pass.
Crockett drove methodically down the field on an eight-play, 77-yard scoring drive with D’Vaughn Le scoring an eight-yard pass from Smith for a 14-7 lead.
Overstreet answered back with another scoring pass to Pickett to pull even at 14-14 with 9:20 left before halftime for the Eagles.
Pickett then intercepted Smith for the first time and returned it 21 yards for a 21-14 Eagle advantage.
After a Crockett touchdown to pull the Bulldogs within 21-20 shortly before halftime.
Eagle kicker Samuel Zapata kicked a 39-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 24-20 at halftime.
