BULLARD — Troup had made a living with its running game this season, racking up 285 yards per game on the ground.

On Friday night, Bullard Brook Hill put a stop to the Tigers’ running — and winning — ways.

In the Guard’s 20-7 victory on homecoming at Herrington Field, the Brook Hill defense held Troup to less than half of its average rushing output.

Gunnar Dorsey rushed for 156 yards for Brook Hill (2-3) and put the game out of reach with an 80-yard touchdown run with 6:59 to play.

Troup (3-2), meanwhile, managed 136 yards on the ground. The Tigers’ seven points was well shy of the 35.8 they had been averaging.

Brook Hill outgained Troup 441-339. The Tigers had been 3-0 before losing to Bullard, 38-34, last week.

Brock Grigsby threw for 176 yards for Troup, but his pass with 4:52 to play was picked off by Austin Langemeier at the Guard 11, allowing Brook Hill to run out the clock.

Guard junior Will Weathers, who threw for 253 yards on 17 of 27 passing, evaded a tackler and completed a 13-yard pass to Langemeier three plays later to keep the drive alive and the clock ticking.

Travis Pirtle, who started the game under center for Brook Hill, led all receivers with five catches for 67 yards.

Trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Guard took their first lead, 13-7, late in the third quarter when Weathers hit Jared Dickey on a 3-yard fade to the left corner.

Troup opened the scoring on its second drive of the game when Seth Gibson took a screen pass 40 yards for the only touchdown in the first half. Gibson finished with a team-best 89 yards on the ground.

Brook Hill managed a pair of Clay Wells field goals in the second quarter. The first kick, from 30 yards, capped a 12-play drive.

Troup failed three times to score on drives that ventured to within 10 yards of the goal line.

In the second quarter, the Tigers drove to the Guard 2 after a 48-yard pass to Brandon Hearon. Brook Hill’s defense pushed Troup back six yards on three plays before the Tigers attempted a 25-yard field goal that went wide.

On the ensuing drive, Tyler Burton caught his first two passes of the year for 52 yards to help the Guard reach the Tiger 3. While Troup also held, Wells booted his second field goal of the quarter from 21 yards to pull the Guard to within 7-6.

Thanks to a 42-yard run from Gibson, Troup reached the red zone just before halftime. But time ran out on the Tigers after James Jiles was tackled at the 7 on the final play of the half.

The Tigers again missed an opportunity when, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Troup’s snap from the Guard 3 sailed over Grigsby’s head and was recovered by Bryan Stephenson.

An’Fernee Ross and Quintin Green each had interceptions for the Tigers.

NOTES: Brook Hill’s mascot dog received a name Friday: Sarge. The orange hound is the sidekick of the Guard’s other mascot, General Guard. … Injured football player Wade Karam was named homecoming king.
