LONGVIEW - Paul Pewitt ran for 313 yards and four touchdowns and one more through the air to defeat Winona, 34-25, Friday night at Lobo Stadium in a Class 3A Division II bi-district matchup.
Tyran Betts carried 27 times for the Brahmas for 244 yards, scoring from 33, 54 and 21 yards. Betts threw for a 30-yard touchdown as well.
After putting together a 22-17 lead after the first half, Paul Pewitt scored two third-quarter touchdowns, including a 30-yard pass from Betts to Tray Hillis and a 21-yard Betts' run.
Interceptions from Tyshun Mitchell and Kolby Slaton in the fourth quarter helped the Brahmas' defense secure the victory and advance to the area playoffs.
A short opening drive ended in a three-and-out. However, the Wildcats recovered a fumbled 42-yard punt to take over at the Brahmas' 14. Two plays later, Deundre Wheeler took a handoff and bounced it outside for a 14-yard score. Pablo Tarango added the extra point to make it 7-0 Winona.
A blocked punt on the Wildcats' next possession set Paul Pewitt up at the Wildcats' 26 and the Brahmas capitalized with a 13-yard sweep by tailback Lamon Hillis. Tyshun Mitchell took the 2-point conversion run to make it 8-7 with 4:42 left in the first.
Tyran Betts scored from 34 yards out following an Alex Jones fumble recovery. Mitchell ran in the conversion to give Paul Pewitt a 16-7 lead after the first quarter.
Winona responded with a 10-yard Wheeler touchdown run with 10:38 remaining in the second. Wheeler took the sweep handoff out of the triple option package, diving across the goal line. The extra point made it 16-14.
Betts added another touchdown run for the Brahmas, this time from 54 yards out. The designed quarterback run opened room in the middle of the field and Betts followed his blocking to the right sideline on his way to the end zone.
A 15-play Wildcat drive near the end of the half resulted in a 31-yard field goal attempt. Tarango stutter-stepped due to a bad snap but was able to get a solid kick through the uprights with 41 seconds left in the half.
Wheeler added a 6-yard touchdown run with 1:15 left in the third for the Wildcats, finishing the game with 93 yards on the ground.
Defensively for Paul Pewitt, Roy Ibarra, Alex Jones, Jonah Hunderford, John Terrell, Tray Hillis and Lamon Hillis each had tackles for loss. Jones recovered a fumble as well.
Joseph Hart (2), Braden Hathorn, Chase Boyd (3), Wheeler, and Darris Bell recorded stops behind the line for the Wildcats. Dakota Pullum recovered a fumble for Winona.
