Inclement weather on Thursday pushed back a pair of area baseball regional final showdowns.
The Class 2A three-game series between Nacogdoches Central Heights and Elkhart is now set to start at 7:30 p.m. today at Kilgore’s Driller Park. Game 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday back in Kilgore. If necessary, Game 3 would follow.
Carlisle and Douglass will now play their one-game Class 1A series at 7 p.m. on Saturday at UT Tyler’s Irwin Field.
Central Heights (27-9-1) reached the regional finals with sweeps of New Waverly (6-2, 9-8) in area, Buna (3-0, 6-3) in the regional quarterfinals and Edgewood (2-1, 12-4) in the regional semifinals.
Elkhart swept Warren (7-0, 14-4) in area and needed three games to beat Crockett (7-2, 6-16, 7-2) in the regional quarterfinals before getting by Queen City in two games (8-1, 2-1) in the regional semifinals.
The third-ranked Elks beat Central Heights twice earlier in the season.
After a first-round bye, Douglass (27-3) defeated Broaddus (6-1, 15-0) and Cushing (12-1, 6-5) in a pair of sweeps in the area and regional quarterfinal rounds, respectively.
Douglass, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, downed Cayuga 8-0 in the regional semifinals last week at UT Tyler behind a complete-game shutout from Collin Wallace.
Carlisle (24-2) defeated Dallardsville Big Sandy 10-6 in Lufkin in the regional semifinals. Standout pitcher Gunner Baker struck out nine while pitching all but two outs of the victory.
The seventh-ranked Indians received a bye before sweeping Cumby Miller Grove in shutout fashion twice (9-0, 10-0) in area, and dominating in a sweep of Maud (13-0, 7-1) in the regional quarterfinals before last week’s effort.
The pitching match pits two unbeaten hurlers in Baker (13-0) and Wallace (12-0).
Carlisle eliminated Douglass from the postseason last year.
The winners in both series advance to the next week’s state tournament at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
