UT Tyler wins national golf championship

The UT Tyler men's golf team won the NCAA Division III National Championship Friday in Destin, Fla.

DESTIN, Fla. — The UT Tyler golf team rallied in the final round to capture the NCAA Division III National Championship Friday at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort.

It is the first NCAA national title for the school and it sent retiring Patriot golf coach King Campbell out with a bang.

The Patriots had a final round of 289 for a four-day total of 1,167, edging third-round leader Transylvania by a seven stroke. Methodist was third at 1,188. The final round was played on the Raven course (par 71).

UT Tyler was paced by runner-up medalist Buddy Hallman, a freshman from Richmond. He had a final round of 1-over 72 for a 72-hole total of 287. Brad Shigezawa of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, won medalist honors with a 283.

Other national championship members for the Patriots were Joey Rippel (T16, 294), Trent Boudoin (T19, 295), John Dukes (T27, 299) and Dayton Cargill (T48, 308).
