INDIANAPOLIS — UT Tyler has been selected to serve as one of eight regional sites for the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Championships, the NCAA announced Friday.
The selection of UT Tyler and the six other sites (Pella, Iowa; Ithaca, N.Y.; Montclair, N.J.; Salem, Va,; Angola, Ind.; Whitewater, Wis.) was made by the NCAA Division III Softball Committee and approved by the Championships Committee. The eighth regional site is still to be determined by the NCAA.
“We are extremely pleased that the NCAA has once again recognized UT Tyler’s ability to provide the highest quality championship experience to the participating teams and their fans,” said Peyton Low, UT Tyler’s assistant athletic director and tournament site director. “The University’s outstanding facilities and the hospitality provided by the City of Tyler and SportTYLER are a great combination for championship-level competition.”
Participants in the 60-team field will be selected and assigned to regional sites when the championship bracket is announced on Monday, May 6. Automatic qualifiers (conference champions) will receive 41 of the 60 berths, independent institutions will receive two bids, and the remaining 17 berths are awarded at-large by the Division III Softball Committee.
The double-elimination regional tournaments will begin May 9 for eight-team regional sites and May 10 for six-team sites.
This is the third year in-a-row that UT Tyler has been selected as a host site. The University also previously served as host of the West Regional in 2008, 2011 and 2012.
The winners of the eight regional sites will advance to the 2013 Finals at the University is Wisconsin-Eau Claire on May 17-21.
The NCAA has previously announced that UT Tyler and the City of Tyler will host the 2014 National Finals, the first time the NCAA Division III Softball Championships will be held in Texas.
