THE COLONY — Tyler’s Haley Mills is tied for the lead with one round remaining at the Texas Women’s Open at the Old American Golf Club. The second and final round will take place Thursday at Old American.

Mills and Christi Cano of San Antonio hold the top spot after both shot 3-under 68s in Wednesday’s opening round. They lead by one stroke over Allison Micheletti of Dallas.

Mills made three birdies on the front nine and two more on the back nine. She is also the low amateur in the field with former Robert E. Lee teammate and now professional Kelsey Kipp tied for sixth place, four shots behind her and Cano.

Tyler’s Kerbey Kipp, also playing as an amateur, is tied for 65th after shooting an opening round 86.

The 36-hole stroke play event features a field of 86 top playing professionals and amateurs competing for a share of the $10,450 purse, with the professional champion taking home $2,500. The 61 amateurs are competing for the low amateur award and a crystal trophy. The top five amateurs will receive gift certificates.
