JACKSONVILLE - Visiting teams winning one game at Curtis Carroll Field House is difficult, let alone two, but Tyler Junior College accomplished that task on Wednesday, sweeping a basketball doubleheader.
Both TJC teams used clutch free throw shooting in the second half to sweep Jacksonville College in their Region XIV Conference contests.
In the first game, Erin Smith came off the bench to score 15 points in leading the No. 22 Apache Ladies to a 65-57 victory over the Lady Jaguars.
In Game Two, the Apaches stayed unbeaten by hitting 19 of 20 free throws in the second half en route to an 80-71 win over the Jaguars.
The Apache Ladies (9-2, 2-1 Region XIV) return to play on Saturday, traveling to Bossier City, Louisiana to meet Bossier Parish in a 2 p.m. contest.
The Apaches (10-0, 3-0) have completed their first semester of work and will return to play Jan. 3 against Houston Community College at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
Point guard Brian Warren led the Apaches with 15 points, including 8 of 8 from the charity stripe. He was one of five TJC players in double figures. Tajuan Agee had 14 points, while Kwinton Hinson and Eden Ewing each had 13 points. Jaquan McCauley, who was also 8 of 8 at the free-throw line, added 10 points.
TJC coach Mike Marquis said it feels good to be unbeaten at the break, “especially in conference. I’m really proud of the team winning on the road at two tough venues and at home against a very good Angelina team.”
The Apaches committed only four turnovers in the second half after Marquis emphasized to the team to take care of the ball after eight first-half turnovers.
Ewing was a monster on the boards with 11 rebounds while Agee had 11 as well.
Jacksonville (7-3, 1-2) was led by Jarrett Henderson’s 18 points with Quinton Gillette adding 14.
TJC was 28 of 32 at the free-throw line with the Jaguars hitting 12 of 18. The Jaguars also had 17 turnovers.
After a disappointing home loss to Angelina, the Apache Ladies played much better in the Tomato Capital of Texas.
Nautica Grant hit for 17 points, including 4 of 9 from three-point land. Smith was next with 15 points. Sky’lynn Holmes had 16 rebounds with Antionette Shrepee adding 10 boards.
The Apache Ladies were 15 of 18 from the free-throw line in what coach Trenia Tillis-Jones called a nice bounce back game, plus winning at a difficult place.
Jacksonville was 16 of 29 at the line.
Brianna Perry led the Lady Jags with 12 points with Florence Sifa adding 16.
