TROUP — After a long day of rain, a light drizzling rain had the battle between rivals Arp and Troup turn into a game of running and the punt return teams making most of the highlights as Troup took a 28-14 win at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
Fourteen fumbles and some wet conditions had an impact on both teams’ passing attack.
“They made some big plays on us and we had some unusual calls late in the game,” Troup coach Denis Alexander said. “But the defense stepped up and made some big plays and we made them fumble a few times that were really crucial for us.”
The visiting Tigers got the first big break of the game.
A huge deflection of an Arp punt bounced off a Troup player and Hunter Holland gave the Arp crew a big break, recovering the ball at the Troup 34.
One play later, Marcalas Johnson sprinted up the middle virtually untouched for a 56-yard touchdown run.
Arp (2-2) recovered another punt return after Troup’s Marcus Kincade ran 37-yards before the ball was knocked loose and covered up by Arp at the 19 of Arp.
Troup (2-2) made a defensive stand to give Kincade a shot at redemption.
The senior wide receiver made good on a 62-yard punt return for the first Troup tally as Troup took a 7-6 lead.
Troup added on to the score with a Blake Lynch scramble from 14-yards out for a 14-6 affair.
Within 18 seconds, after Arp fumbled away the ball, Arp tied the score as Thomas Reese intercepted a Lynch pass and raced 50-yards for a touchdown to tie it at 14 with 10:42 to play.
Two Troup fumble recoveries by Lafabion Lydia and one by Marquis Davis in the fourth quarter helped seal the win.
Lydia’s first recovery started the Lynch 14-yard score and Marquis Davis jumped on another Arp miscue resulting in a Lynch 10-yard scamper.
A bad snap on an Arp punt was jumped on by Lafabion Lydia again at the Arp 29.
Three plays later, Brandon Hearon beat his defender deep, turned around to make an over-the-shoulder catch and backed into the end zone to make it 28-14.
Marcalas Johnson led all rushers and finished with 20 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown to pace Arp.
Arp quarterback Justin Johnson completed 2 of 16 for 14 yards on the slippery night.
Troup quarterback Blake Lynch led Troup in rushing with 73 yards in 15 tries. Lynch also found the air game slippery-when-wet, completing 6 passes in 18 tries for 114 yards, one interception and the TD pass to Hearon.
Troup receiver Hearon made five catches for 70 yards. Marcus Kincade accounted for 149 yards in return yardage and a score for the Troup special teams.
