DALLAS — Tyler Junior College opened its soccer season with a 2-0 victory over Johnson County (Kansas) Community College Friday at Richland College.
Scoring goals for the No. 2-ranked Apaches were Nestor Peralta, a freshman from New Orleans, and Yaw Amankwa, a sophomore from Baltimore.
Jimmy Sandoval, a freshman from Tyler, had an assist on the Peralta goal, while Michael Lens, a freshman from Dallas, had the assist on the Amankwa goal.
TJC coach Steve Clements complimented his defense and the hustle of the team.
The Apaches return to play on Tuesday traveling back to Dallas and Richland to meet the Thunderducks in a 7 p.m. game.
TJC’s home opener is Friday against Hill College. The contest at Pat Hartley Field is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Apache Ladies split
BRENHAM — The No. 5 Apache Ladies dropped their first volleyball match of the season on Friday to No. 1 Blinn.
The Lady Bucs won 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-17). It was a rematch of last year’s national championship game.
In the first match of the day, the Apache Ladies scored a 3-0 win over Yavapai (Arizona) College.
TJC won 25-14, 25-18, 25-10.
Today, Tyler will play No. 17 New Mexico Military Institue (1 p.m.) and Eastern Arizona (5 p.m.).
TJC is home Wednesday against Lamar State-Port Arthur. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
