HUNTSVILLE — The Tyler Junior College Apaches finished fifth in the Sam Houston State University Harold Funston Invitational Golf Tournament on Tuesday at Ravens Nest Country Club.
In the women’s tournament, the Apache Ladies placed 10th.
Sam Houston State won the men’s tournament with an 845, followed by Abilene Christian (869), Oral Roberts (872), Stephen F. Austin (873) and TJC (875).
Zach Gabra (67-69-68—204) of SHSU won medalist honors, while teammate Albert Miner (68-69-70—207) was second. ORU’s Scott Newell was third at 208 (69-72-67).
Cory Sammons paced TJC with a sixth-place finish at 212 (68-74-70). Teammate Brandon Rougeau tied for seventh at 214 (73-74-67). Otehr Apache golfers were Tim Nichols (T24, 74-77-71—222), Charlie Cameron (T36, 78-72-79—229) and Calvin Lackey (T46, 76-85-79—240).
SFA was led by John Luke Sheehan (T7, 68-76-70—214) and Bradley Phelps (T12, 70-76-71—217). Austin DeWitt tied for 14th (73-73-72—218).
Sam Houston State also won the women’s tourney. The Bearkats shot an 874. Rounding out the top five were Lamar (877), Incarnate Word (893), Oral Roberts (901) and SFA (911).
TJC scored a 985. Saraid Ruiz led the Apache Ladies with a tie for 35th and a 238 (82-81-75). Other Tyler golfers were Morgan Best (41, 79-84-79—242), Jessica Sachs (44, 82-77-87—246), Bailey McCawley (50, 89-86-85—260) and Paige Spiers (55, 95-89-86—270).
Wenny Chang of Lamar won medalist honors with a 215 (71-71-73), followed by Incarnate Word’s Flower Castillo (76-71-69—216) and Lamar’s Ghni Ngo (71-70-75—216) tying for second.
SFA was paced by Jessica White (11, 75-71-77—223).
