PORT ARTHUR — Tyler Junior College got behind early and could never catch up as Lamar State scored an 81-72 win over the Apaches in the Region XIV basketball conference opener on Tuesday at the Parker Center.

Ta’Jon Welcome led TJC with 16 points, while DeAndre Harris added 15. Anthony Odunsi and Trevor Berkeley added 12 points apiece.

Other conference games on Tuesday included: Navarro 62, Jacksonville 59; Trinity Valley 62, San Jacinto 60; Kilgore 86, Angelina 66; Lee 72, Bossier Parish 46; Paris 59, Blinn 56; and Coastal Bend 78, Panola 58.

TJC (6-2) returns to play this weekend in the Kurt Looby Classic. Friday’s games are scheduled for Wagstaff Gymnasium, while Saturday’s games will be played on Saturday at Masters Gym in Kilgore.

Friday’s games have Kilgore meeting Houston Community College at 5 p.m., followed by TJC vs. the national team from Antigua at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s game at Kilgore has TJC playing Houston CC at 5 p.m. and Kilgore taking on Antigua at 7 p.m.

Looby is a former player for TJC, Iowa and Antigua. He is currently playing professionally for EnBW Ludwigsburg of the Germany.

Also, TJC has added a game on Jan. 2 against Houston CC at Wagstaff Gym. Tipoff will be 2 p.m.

Apache Ladies 81, Mountain View College 26

DALLAS — Keaira Arion hit for 20 points and the Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies rolled to an 81-26 win over Mountain View College on Tuesday in a women’s basketball game.

Carolina Lopez (15 points) and Shernise Robertson (12) were also in double figures for TJC (4-4).

The Apache Ladies remain on the road this weekend to compete in the Collin Classic in Plano. TJC plays South Plains at noon on Friday and Seminole State at noon on Saturday.
