WAXAHACHIE — Texas College claimed first place in the Red River Athletic Conference to themselves, beating Southwestern Assemblies of God 71-58 on the road Monday.

Wendell Maye led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds for the Steers, who improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the RRAC. Jamal Robertson scored 16 points and Titus Stevenson tossed in 14 points and eight rebounds for the Steers.

The Lady Steers lost a close game to SAGU in the women’s contest, 79-76. The Lady Steers fell to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in conference.

The Steers shot 51 percent in the victory. TC continued its stellar defensive play, holding SAGU to 32 percent shooting from the field.

In the RRAC men’s standings, only the Steers and Texas Wesleyan (7-1, 2-0) have yet to lose a league game. TC returns home Saturday to play host to the University of the Southwest (N.M.).
