All Saints got a three-hitter from pitcher Maddie Smith to take a 6-3 win over Bishop Gorman on Friday at the Lady Trojans Field in TAPPS 2-4A softball action.
Smith finished the game with nine strikeouts, seven walks and one hit batter. She shut down the Lady Crusaders the final four innings with no hits.
The Lady Trojans jumped on three Lady Crusaders errors in the first inning to open a 3-0 lead.
Dallas University-signee Madison Goforth was a catalyst for All Saints in the leadoff spot, going 2 for 4. She reached base a third time on a dropped fly that led to the fifth run of the game. Goforth scored three runs.
After a lead off single, Goforth was driven in by Cierra Cinti’s hit that was misplayed. Two batters later, Megan Daviau got on via another TKG error, scoring Cinti. The third error on Caly Thorton’s hit plated Daviau.
Gorman bounced back with one run in the second when Madi Lamance hit an RBI single to score Sarah Nemec, who led off with a walk.
The senior shortstop Goforth led off the second stanza with a triple, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Smith.
The Lady Crusaders got back-to-back hits from pitcher Katelyn Jacobi and Nemec. Jacobi drove in Becca Waters after her lead-off walk. Nemec then ripped an RBI-single for a 4-3 contest.
The Lady Trojans got a huge catch in left field from Hannah Henderson, flagging down a fly ball with runners in scoring position in the fifth. Henderson made another gem running down a foul ball for an out to thwart another TKG rally.
“The plays in the outfield were huge for us,” Lady Trojans coach Nick Champion said. “We have really worked on getting better and Hannah (Henderson) made two big catches for us that were key for us.
“We got some good at-bats and we bunted the ball well and we moved runners with a few sacrifices too that meant runs for us.”
Smith aided her cause on the mound with some insurance after a two-out single in the sixth paid off. Smith stole second base and scored on Daviau’s RBI single for the 6-3 final.
Dallas Christian will travel to play at All Saints (6-3, 6-2 TAPPS 2-4A) on Monday at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Crusaders (5-9, 3-4), look to get back on a winning roll when they entertain Waco Reicher on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at John Carney Field.
