DALLAS — Jacksonville’s Hunter Shattuck fired a 1-under 70 to share the first round lead in the 14th HP Byron Nelson Junior Golf Championship on Tuesday at Lakewood Country Club.
Shattuck is tied with Dylan Yarbrough of Rockwall and Walker Lee of Houston for the top spot.
Devin Jackson of Longview and Benjamin Baxter of Flower Mound are one shot back.
Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour, the HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship features one of the strongest fields in the region with 78 players from Texas, Mexico and Japan. The par-71 Lakewood CC is playing 6,680 yards for all competitors.
Shattuck, playing in his one and only HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship before heading to McLennan Community College in the fall, had four birdies during his round, including one on No. 18.
The Bullard Brook Hill School graduate won the TAPPS Class 3A medalist honor at the state tournament, while helping the Guard to the state title.
Conditions were not ideal for golfers on Tuesday, with winds gusting up to 30 mph.
Jordan Sanders of Cedar Park is sixth at 72, while defending champion Benjamin Arnett of Houston is in a six-way tie at 2-over par 73. Also in that group is three-time runner-up Stratton Nolen of Austin and last year’s Legends Junior Tour Player of the Year, Bryce Alley of Longview.
DJ Godoy of Hideaway carded a 6-over 77 and is tied for 38th, while Nacogdoches’ Colin Frizzell had a 78 and is tied for 48th. Sulphur Springs’ Zachary Blackmon is tied for 63rd after an 81.
The second round of 54-hole tourney is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
