Robert E. Lee’s boys and girls cross country teams took home the top prize at the 11th Annual Puddle Jump and Pig Trot hosted Saturday by Pine Tree High School. The races were held at Katy Ranch near Kilgore and featured rugged terrain and numerous hills.

Lee sophomore Haftu Knight and senior Ian Estrada finished 1-2 as the Red Raiders ran away from the competition with seven runners placing in the Top 20 as medalists. Knight was first in a time of 16 minutes and 34 seconds. In second was Estrada, crossing the line in a time of 16:57. Also finishing the race were Simon Gachibi, 5th (17:37); Trevor Doke, 6th (17:44); Tye Valdez, 12th (18:29); Trestan Valdez, 17th (18:42); and Cole Von Eschenbach, 19th (18:54).

The REL girls also finished 1-2 with senior Mary Claire Neal and freshman Sarah Niedrauer besting the field. Neal won in a time of 21 minutes and 38 seconds with Niedrauer second in a time of 22:08.

REL coach Dennis Baker said a bee swarm that invaded the course forced race at the conclusion of the boys race forced race officials to change the route, which lengthened the course for the girls race.

Also crossing the line for the Lady Raiders were Lady Raiders were Caroline Lofquist, 5th (23:41; Annelise Conaway, 7th (24:07); Summer Dockery, 12th (24:42); Madie Trimble, 18th (25:46); Reyna Cordero, 19th (26:14) and Leide Aguirre, 28th (27:18).
