KELLER - Robert E. Lee boys soccer started the season off with a 2-0 victory over Timber Creek at the Rex King Memorial Tournament on Thursday at Timber Creek High School.
In Conroe, the Lady Raiders were stopped 5-0 by Clear Creek in their opening game of the Lady Highlander Invitational.
The Red Raiders (1-0) got on the board late in the first half when defender Chris Escalante stole the ball from a Timber Creek player and did the honors himself for the senior's first varsity goal.
Lee went into the wind in the second half, but was able to maintain its lead. With 15 minutes remaining, seniors Sergio Saucedo and Edgar Sanchez combined to double the Red Raiders' advantage. Sanchez raced to the end line and pulled a ball back with a pinpoint pass to Sanchez, who did the rest.
Senior Anthony Pirtle posted a clean sheet in goal for Lee.
Lee coach Marty Germany said the result was good, but not great.
"Good team effort, but we need to clean up our passing game," Germany said. "Under these windy conditions, balls have to go to feet."
The Lee boys will now face Arlington in the semifinals. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was pushed to Saturday because of freezing conditions. It will kick off at 1 p.m. at Timber Creek High School. If Lee wins, it will move to the championship scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Lee girls will be in action Friday as the Lady Raiders aim to bounce back. REL will face Houston Bellaire at 5 p.m. as Gosling Complex in Conroe.
