KILGORE — East Texas used a big opening inning to help end a three-game losing streak, holding off Woodlands down the stretch, 7-6, in Texas Collegiate League baseball action Friday night at Driller Park.

The Pump Jacks scored five runs on seven hits in the first, getting RBI hits from four consecutive batters against a Strykers team that entered the game riding a two-game winning streak. East Texas returns to the road today to face the Texas Marshals.

The Pump Jacks (11-15), the defending TCL champions, jumped on Strykers (9-17) starting pitcher Zach Heard of Cisco Junior College. East Texas starter Robert Parucha (California-Davis), on the flip side, lasted until the eighth inning to earn the win on five hits.

East Texas’ Connor Huesers (Lower Columbia College) got the first inning started with a one-out single and moved to third on a two-base error on a pickoff attempt. Huesers scored one batter later when Mitch Meyer (Kansas State) smashed an RBI single to make it 1-0.

After UNLV’s Joey Armstrong singled on the next plate appearance, Longview native Bret McAfee (U of Arkansas) posted an RBI single and Mark Mathias (Cal Poly San Luis Obisco) blasted a one-run double off the top of the wall in left to make it 3-0.

The next two batters, North Central Texas College’s Garrett McMullen (Longview native) and Arkansas-Little Rock’s Ryan Hop, followed with RBI singles to give the Pump Jacks a quick 5-0 lead.

Meyer finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. East Texas got two hits each from McAfee, McMullen, Armstrong and Huesers.

Taylor Taska of Texas A&M-Kingsville and Connor Kalisky of U of the Incarnate Word finished with two RBIs each to lead Woodlands, which scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and another in the eighth after winning 5-4 in 10 innings against the Pump Jacks on Thursday.

Kalisky’s two-run single in the ninth put the go-ahead run at the plate, but Pump Jacks reliever Kenny Oakley struck out the final batter for the save.
