Once again, White Oak is advancing multiple events to the UIL state tennis tournament.

On Friday morning, the Roughnecks claimed spots in boys and mixed doubles at the Class 2A Region III tennis championships at Tyler Junior College’s JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.

Top-seeded Tyler Keel and Collin McMullen earned state berths for the third straight season, beating No. 4 Dillon Seals and Tanner Sims of Kirbyville 6-2, 6-0 in the title match.

Meanwhile, White Oak’s Donald Griffin and Shelby Stillwell fell to top-seeded Jacob Rowe and Elizabeth Windon of Kirbyville in the final. The second-seeded duo then had to beat fellow Roughnecks Carson Andrews and Hannah Ratzliff in a playback match to advance to state, set for April 29-30 at Texas A&M University in College Stadium.

“It’s exciting, especially because they’ve been there before and they are seniors and this is their last chance,” White Oak coach Tammy Cloud said. “The boys had to put in major, major extra time. They want it bad because this is their third time to get down there.”

The championship matches were postponed until Friday morning because of Thursday’s inclement weather.

In other events, top-seeded Brent Wallingford of Franklin beat No. 2 Hayden Smith of Hughes Springs 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match. Smith had to face fourth-seeded Jesse Dameron of Kirbyville in a playback to earn a state berth, winning the match 6-1, 6-2.

In girls doubles, No. 1 Shelby Allred and Layne Allred of Alba-Golden claimed a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory against third-seeded Bailey Cates and Kayla Douglas in the final. No playback was needed, meaning Cates and Douglas also advanced to state.
